Scattering Garden & Ossuary

Introduction

At Chilliwack Cemeteries we have two scattering options available. Both the Scattering Garden and Ossuary provide a permanent location to ceremonially release cremated remains. Inscriptions can be made to memorialize those interred in their location.

The Scattering Garden is located in a serene location on top of the South Hill.

There are 2 ossuaries. The Mount View ossuary is conveniently located on the drive through the middle of the cemetery, directly on the side of the road. The Mt Cheam Ossuary is in the Mt Cheam memorial area near the new book memorial.

Here are some things to keep in mind with scattering a loved one at Chilliwack Cemeteries:

• Remains that are scattered are unrecoverable.
• You cannot preneed a scattering interment.
• Both scattering options have memorial walls nearby. Granite inscriptions are done annually in the fall.
• In the scattering garden you may plant a small, annual plant or bulb at the time of interment in memory of your loved one (approved list available).
• Remains in ossuaries are commingled.

What Does Unrecoverable Mean?

When we say that scattering is unrecoverable, we mean exactly that. Scattering whether in a garden or ossuary involves removing the cremains from their container and placing them directly in their interment locations.

Why Should I Scatter at the Cemetery Instead of the River, Lake etc?

While scattering a loved one in the river or lake, etc. sounds like the best way, future generations may find this distressing as there is no permanent location to visit.

My Loved One Was Scattered Elsewhere – What Are My Options?

Chilliwack Cemeteries offers locations for people who are not interred in the cemetery to be memorialized. Please ask us about these options.

What Are My Options for Memorial Markings?

We have several memorial walls, arbours, or other areas. For granite inscription walls, the marker will be removed, and new inscriptions will be added annually in the fall.
